چکیده

The CLEO-c data sample is dominated should find more precise number by cosmic muons that triggered the detector. Further, cosmic muons have a hard momentum spectra as well as containing tracks that are not going through the origin. Hence, the sample of cosmic rays would provide a valuable sample of tracks for doing alignment. This note describes such an attempt. Besides using cosmic muons a χ minimization technique is used to determine the alignment parameters. The formalism for this is presented in Section 2. Implementation specific formulas such as the needed derivatives with respect to track parameters and alignment parameters are presented in Section 3. In Section 4 the CLEO alignment parameters for the DR and ZD is described. Section 5 describes how the Kalman fit is used to do the constrained fit of the two tracks to one through going, continuous track.

Studies of the performance of the ATLAS detector using cosmic-ray muons

Muons from cosmic-ray interactions in the atmosphere provide a high-statistics source of particles that can be used to study the performance and calibration of the ATLAS detector. Cosmic-ray muons can penetrate to the cavern and deposit energy in all detector subsystems. Such events have played an important role in the commissioning of the detector since the start of the installation phase in 2...

Reconstruction of Cosmic and Beam-Halo Muons with the CMS Detector

The efficient and accurate detection of muons and the reconstruction of their momenta with high precision over a large range of muon energies are crucial for the LHC physics program. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment [1] at the LHC provides excellent muon identification and reconstruction capabilities. A large superconducting solenoid with a 4 T magnetic field provides strong bending p...

Commissioning and performance of the ATLAS Inner Detector with the first beam and cosmic data

The ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) started data-taking in Autumn 2008 with the inauguration of the LHC. The Inner Detector is a tracking system for charged particles based on three technologies: silicon pixels, silicon microstrips and drift tubes. The detector was commissioned and calibrated in the ATLAS cavern. Cosmic muons data are used for timing the different compo...

The Speed and Lifetime of Cosmic Ray Muons

We measure the mean lifetime and speed of cosmic ray muons at sea level using coincidence techniques with scintillation detectors. We find the mean speed v of muons traveling near normal to earth’s surface to be 29.8 ± 2.5 cm/ns, corresponding to βμ = 0.994 ± 0.08 and γμ of 9.14. Our result is in agreement with the accepted average speed of vμ, which is listed as between 0.994 or 0.998 dependin...

Cosmic-ray Muon Tomography and Its Application to the Detection of High-z Materials

Each minute, about 10000 muons rain down on every square meter of Earth. These charged elementary particles are produced by cosmic rays striking the upper atmosphere. Millions of highly penetrative muons pass through our bodies, cars and houses daily. Penetrating the objects, muons interact with atoms of different materials, mainly electromagnetically. They are more strongly deflected, or scatt...
